We're all getting ready for one of the best events of the year.  Please plan to join us for the 4th annual lighting of the sequoias.  We'll have hot drinks, delicious pie from Mehri's Bakery and Cafe, music, a raffle for killer Blazers tickets, and many cool gift items to support the park.  Do you know someone who would love a cool winter hat like the ones below that helped save three beautiful old trees from being cut down?  Get them at the event!

On Monday our friends from Oregon Tree Care came to hang the lights.  It's always exciting to see them climb all the way to the top of the tallest sequoia tree, 180 feet up.  We can't wait to see everything lighted!  Click here for more info about the tree lighting.  See you there!

This is going to be a good one guys.  We'll have a good old fashioned pig pickin' bbq, North Carolina style and some great bands including local favorites Lenore!  We will celebrate the saving of the giants and continue to raise funds to support the park.  We're down to $70k to pay off the land and when that happens the sequoias can be registered as heritage trees and protected forever!  Please mark your calendars and let your friends know.  This is the place to be on the afternoon of Saturday June 23!

We're very excited about the upcoming 3rd annual lighting of the sequoias coming up on Sunday, Dec 10th, 3:30-6:00pm.  We'll have live music, free hot drinks and sweets, all sorts of amazing Save The Giants gifts like hats, mugs and T-shirts, as well as a raffle for killer seats to a Blazers game!  Come one come all!

Save the date!  Please join us for an afternoon of live music, free root beer floats, and general merriment underneath the giants sequoias of Martins Street.  Laura Gibson will perform as well as a local bluegrass band and several acoustic guitar players.  We will raffle off a New Belgium Brewing fat tire bike and we are looking into having our friends at Expedition Old Growth offer guided tours UP the giant sequoias!   Facebook event page here.

Now that the weather is getting warmer and drier we are encouraging school groups to come and visit Save The Giants Park.  The first of these visits took place last week when a Mr. Steinke's 5th grade class hiked over from Woodstock Elementary School.  The students played and relaxed in the shade of the three giants sequoias and learned about the community efforts which preserved these century old sequoias for generations to come.  We think it makes for a fine lesson in both nature appreciation and community engagement.  If you are an educator and would like to arrange for a visit please get in touch and also check out our lesson plans here.

We will have free hot chocolate, chai tea, and coffee.  Singer Alexa Wiley and her band will perform and lead us in song and we will light up the giant sequoias!  We will also have amazing handcrafted gifts, earrings and ornaments made from the pruned limbs of the sequoias, T-shirts, pint glasses, and more. All proceeds go to support the park.  Please join us!

Please join us on Friday November 4th, 5:30-8:30pm for our first ever Tree Advocacy Free Dinner and Workshop.  This will be a fun and informative event with several interesting and dynamic speakers and well as a free buffet dinner.  Save the Giants is co-sponsoring this event along with Friends of Trees and the East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District because we believe that an informed active community can do a lot to preserve our urban capon here in Portland and beyond.  We are at a time of rapid transformation in Portland and while few dispute the need for new housing and infrastructure in general, there are so many simple ways in which big beautiful trees can be preserved while achieving these goals.  Come learn about what you can do, get informed, and meet others who share the same interest.  Click here for info and to RSVP.  for more We hope to see you there!
